Reporting a figure that looks wrong
These details make a report quick to check:
- the state, and the page address if you have it;
- the salary or hourly rate, the pay frequency and the filing status you used;
- the line that looks wrong, and what you expected it to be;
- where your figure comes from: a state document, your paycheck, or your tax return.
We check every report against the source document. If we got it wrong, we fix the figure and record the correction in the tax changes log. If the difference has another explanation, we write back with it. The most common one is that employers withhold using per-paycheck tables and the calculator works out the tax owed for the year. The methodology page explains the difference.
Newer documents
States publish their figures at different times, and not always where you would expect. If you've seen an official document for a state that is missing from the site, or a newer edition of one we cite, send us the link. It is the fastest way for a missing state to be added.
What we can't help with
We can't give advice on your own taxes, prepare or review a return, or tell you what to claim. For that, a qualified tax professional or the IRS and your state's revenue department are the right places to ask.
